About this unit of competency
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response and emergency life support to a casualty in a remote and/or isolated situation.
The unit applies to workers who may be required to prepare for and provide a first aid response in locations beyond the reach of timely medical assistance.
Specific licensing /regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

HLTAID005 Provide first aid in remote situations
Students are to complete pre course theory via self-paced learning using either our on-line courses or we can send out a workbook and manual. Upon completion of the theory students are required to attend 14 hours of face to face workshop.
A refresher course is available for students who hold a current Remote Area First Aid certificate, in which case there is no pre course theory to complete, however It is highly recommended that all learners complete the pre-course work. Students just attend the face to face workshop which may be completed in a shorter timeframe depending on the current skills and knowledge of Students.

- Preparation for isolated work and/or travel
- Communication systems
- Evacuation and transportation procedures
- Prolonged casualty care
- Improvise treatment and resources
- Communicating details of the incident, reporting and handover
- Evaluation of performance
- Remote Area First Aid Manual
- All training resources (bandages, face shields, gloves, etc)
- Student support services
- Multiple choice questions
- Practical demonstrations/skills observations
- Completion of reports
Language, Literacy & Numeracy requirements
The remote area first aid course combines plain English, videos, photos, and questioning to ensure all learners are able to have the best possible chance at comprehending the required knowledge and developing first aid skills that will be needed in an emergency. If you believe you will need assistance due to your Language, Literacy or Numeracy skills, please contact our head office before enrolling to discuss your training needs.
All students must bring ID with them to the training course. Photo ID is the minimum requirement (e.g. Drivers Licence, Passport or similar).
Assessment submission process, support and outcomes
Assessment Outcomes: Competent or Not Competent
For any learner who is unable to satisfactorily complete all assessment tasks, the assessor will attempt to make reasonable adjustments to the methods of assessment. If the learner is deemed not competent, they will need to re-sit the training course and additional fees will apply.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Students choosing to undertake RPL will need to be sent an RPL guide for their course.
In order to be eligible for RPL, the student must demonstrate currency in that particular subject. I.e. a student cannot submit evidence from 5 years prior and request it be applied directly to their new competency. They must show how they have since applied those skills and that they are current.
- Upon successful completion a Statement of Attainment and Walletcard will be issued for HLTAID005 Provide first aid in remote situations
- Valid for 3 year from the completion date
Participants must be 14 years or older
Participants are required to complete the Provide First Aid training prior to attending the remote area session. Provide First Aid is offered Complimentary when attending the Remote area training.
Should you have completed the Provide First Aid course within the last 12 months you may attend just the Remote area session, although we will require a copy of your current first aid certificate as proof.
