What is a USI?
A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a mandatory reference number required for all students undertaking Nationally Recognised Training in Australia. The USI ensures that your training records and qualifications are stored securely and are accessible when you need them.
Why Do You Need a USI?
The Australian Government requires all students completing Nationally Recognised Training to have a USI.
Without a USI:
- You will not be able to receive your Statement of Attainment or Qualification.
- Your training records will not be recorded on the national register.
- You may not be eligible for government-funded training programs.
Who Needs a USI?
A USI is required for:
- All students enrolling in Nationally Recognised Training, including short courses and full qualifications.
- Both domestic and international students studying with an Australian training provider.
- School students undertaking VET courses.
How to Apply for a USI
Applying for a USI is simple and free.
Follow these steps:
- Visit the official USI website at www.usi.gov.au.
- Click on ‘Create a USI’ and follow the instructions.
- Provide a valid form of identification, such as:

Providing Your USI to Your Training Provider
Once you have obtained your USI, you must provide it to your training provider before you commence your course.
If you do not provide a valid USI, your enrolment may be delayed, and you will not receive your certification upon course completion.
Forgotten Your USI?
If you have previously created a USI but have forgotten it, you can retrieve it by:
- Visiting the USI website and selecting ‘Find My USI’.
- Logging in to your USI account.
- Contacting the USI support team for assistance.
